Homemade Natural Toothpaste

Homesteading, Natural Home & Personal Care

In an effort to not only heal our teeth but eliminate harmful toxins from our everyday life I’ve started making our own toothpaste.

Conventional store bought toothpastes contain terrifying toxic substances, the one raising the most concern being Fluoride. Did you know that Fluoride was initially used as a rat poison?! Yes you heard me rat poison. Bravo to the genius that decided putting rat poison in toothpaste was a good idea. If that isn’t enough to get you to switch then let me tell you a few other facts about Fluoride. Just to name a few Fluoride has been linked to:

Thyroid Damage

-Lower IQ

-Brain damage

-Impacted learning and behavior

– Non-IQ Neurotoxic effects

– Reduced Melatonin Production

– Earlier puberty in children

-Bone Damage and/or cancer

– Reproductive Issues

Anywho that is not something I want anywhere near my family’s mouths. Sure there are some natural options out there, but not all of them have ingredient lists I am comfortable with and when then do they can be quite pricey. Besides being cheap, making your own is a lot of fun! I combined Wellness Mama’s Remineralizing Toothpaste with a few of my own ingredients to suit our preferences. Wellness Mama’s recipe is great but we didn’t like the fact that it solidified and was difficult to spread around the mouth. The taste…well it takes some getting used to but all in all it isn’t bad.

Homemade Toothpaste

  • 5 parts Calcium powder
  • 1 part Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (optional- contains trace minerals and silica. UPDATE: A reader noted that DE can be abrasive and is not needed with the baking soda, so if you don’t have DE… no worries!) IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE YOUR DE IS FOOD GRADE. COMMERCIAL DE CAN BE HARMFUL AND SHOULD NEVER BE USED IN PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS!
  • 2 parts Baking Soda
  • 3 parts Xylitol Powder– This ingredient is not completely necessary, but just keeps it from tasting bitter. It also has been shown to have positive oral health benefits so I like to throw it in!
  • 3-5 parts coconut oil – I like to melt it
  • 1-2 Parts. Liquid Castile Soap- This one is unscented and great for this but use whatever you like
  • 2 -3 Parts Filtered Water- To get desired texture
  • 4-6 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract
  • Peppermint Essential Oil- I used 30-40 drops but use to your preference. You can also you whatever essential oils you prefer.

This recipe is written in parts. I use Tbsp. So it will read 5 Tbsp. Calcium powder, 1 Tbsp. DE etc. etc. you can do more or less depending on how much you want to make. I found this filled up a pint size mason jar and we are having trouble making a dent in it 🙂

– I like to run my Xylitol through a spice grinder or smash it up with my mortar and pestle to get it to a powder consistency because it is a bit coarse.

– Mix dry ingredients together

-Add coconut oil, liquid castile soap, water, grapefruit seed extract and essential oils

-Mix until combined

– Add more water if needed

– Store in a glass jar with lid

We just dip our toothbrushes in or use a Popsicle stick to spread on the bristles. This will firm up a little but i find it is still a paste like consistency. You can add more water if you want to further thin it out. Our teeth feel clean and fresh and so far we love it!

Buying a house, moving across country and trying to maintain a routine is hard. Like way hard. I’m not going to lie..I forgot I hadn’t posted for a while. :/ my bad. Anywho I have a lot to share..and I will..but for now I just want to share some down time we got this weekend. If you can’t tell we LOVE being outdoors, so much that we get cabin fever if we don’t get to go for at least a walk in nature everyday. Well living in a studio apartment w/ a loft for the past month and a half does not help the situation..it only exacerbates it by 100. Chris, Stephanie & Darci..all crammed in a small space ALL day EVERYday. Don’t get me wrong..we all love eachother but we’ve gotta get out & breathe.

Lately we’ve been going to Bear Lake..which is this great spring fed lake that Darci adores swimming in. Unfortunately the experience is ruined. We all know that humans are nasty nasty creatures right? No? Am I alone in thinking this? We destroy our oceans, pollute every smidge of nature, cause forest fires and destroy our bodies just to name a few. Well the disgusting people that visit Bear Lake are no different. People chain smoking and dropping the buds on the floor, trash including beer bottles left everywhere, left behind dog doodoo, and people making out & spitting in the water! What the eff…people are gross. Our last visit was enough to make us leave 5 minutes after getting there. Who wants to go out in nature and smell the fresh..cigarette smoke?! Ugh…so we decided to make a trip up to Bead Lake which is an extra hour or so drive but oh so worth it.

Bead Lake is in The Colville National forest…and it is gorgeous! FOREST PEOPLE! Sorry for yelling 😉 It has beautiful hiking area and some people…but very few…oh and best of all no trash everywhere and the smell of fir and pine trees not cigarettes. Yay. We’ve seen a handful of deer and we even saw a bear. Yep he ran right across the road in front of our car. That was priceless. So we hiked..and Darci ran a lot..and we swam in the cleanest water i’ve ever seen…and we caught crawdads just to practice..want to see pictures?

Steps to keep my teeth healthy

Natural Home & Personal Care

I’m finally getting over my sickness..sort of. I hate being sick.

I also went to the dentist yesterday…which always makes me nervous. I don’t know why..I take care of my teeth and it’s never that bad, I just hate the dentist.

So after tons of X-rays and prodding and drooling they told me my teeth are in good shape…a little wear and some staining ( bad coffee and red wine) but only 1 cavity..which incidentally is from a cracked filling that wasn’t done right way back in the day. Thank you crappy dentists! All in all it wasn’t too bad. Apparently I was due for a deep cleaning though which involves Novocaine and some major digging and scraping. They only did 1 side of my mouth, which sucks because I have to go back again today, and once the Novocaine wore off my mouth was pretty sore…boo.

Also I got to listen to the dentist tell me I need to use Fluoride toothpaste and a Fluoride rinse, otherwise my teeth cannot be healthy. Fluoride, Fluoride, Fluoride. I’m sorry but no..Fluoride is poison. I’ve been using Natural Fluoride-Free Toothpaste for around 9 months or so and my teeth are in pretty good shape. I think it’s safe to say nobodys teeth are rotting away rapidly from lack of fluoride. At least not mine.

Anyways back to my point…I’ve been talking to my cousin the past few days about natural toothpaste and with all the dentist stuff I feel like teeth are an appropriate topic for today. I have a fear of one day my teeth rotting out of my head and being left with nothing but gums resembling a cross between a grandma and gumby. :/ Why this fear? I don’t know…but that’s why they call fears irrational. So I’ve been doing reading and reading about healing teeth naturally. Wellness Mama talks about healing tooth decay and remineralizing teeth a lot as well as Mark Sisson who had a great post from Denise Minger, Author of Death by Food Pyramid ( another topic for another post) about her trouble as a Raw Vegan and her quest to heal her damaged teeth and gums. I know what you’re thinking..healing your teeth?! Dentists tell us that can’t be done. Well I think it can. I also believe that if there are things that can naturally heal teeth…why not begin to do this as a preventative measure?

A few things that all of these articles have in common are:

-Eating a real foods diet

– Limiting your sugar intake (which will be done naturally following a real foods diet)

– Vitamins A, D and K2 which are key in tooth healing and health

– LIVER consumption! Do it!

– Limiting your acidic foods, which yes..includes most fruits!

-Fermented Cod Liver Oil (which bonus..has tons of other health benefits)

So along with tightening the ropes on my diet in the form of a Low-Carb Paleo/Ketogenic approach, i’m going to add Fermented Cod Liver Oil and Vitamin K2 to my supplements ( I already take Vitamin D everyday and get plenty of sunshine!) and amp up the liver intake for the Vitamin A. I’m hoping to prevent any issues and try to at least somewhat heal my 1 cavity.

Chris goes in for his dental exam & cleaning on Monday…he thinks my heal your cavity approach is “interesting”. I’m curious to see how/if his tune changes after his visit 🙂 Not that he isn’t supportive he like most people have never thought of that being a possibility. Plus i’m always throwing new crunchy crazy healthy ideas his way!

I’ll keep everyone posted!
